Melvin Guillard: “I feel like this is a must win fight for me”

|

Melvin Guillard will be facing off against Fabrício Camões at UFC 148 this Saturday night. Since his stint on The Ultimate Fighter 2, he has gone on a tear and has been inching very close to a lightweight title shot.

Unfortunately, he is currently on a two fight losing streak. With the UFC’s lightweight division being so stacked, this could be a must win situation for Guillard.

Guillard recently spoke with Heavy.com about how successful he must be against Camões, “I feel like this is a must win fight for me and I have to not only go in there and win, but win impressively. So, when you have the atmosphere with guys putting in the hard work and long hours you have no choice but to put in those long hours and work just as hard because you want to be successful. That’s my main goal, I want to stay successful and I want to show that I don’t take advantage of the opportunities that are in front of me.”

This is the UFC’s 4th of July card, which is always stacked. The main event is one of the biggest rematches in UFC history, between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. Guillard spoke about being on such a big card, “You know me man, it’s 4th of July weekend and you guys can always expect fireworks from me. Like I said earlier, I get to fight on the card for the first time with one of the guys that I admire the most in the sport and that’s Anderson Silva. I knew of Anderson Silva before he was in the UFC and he’s definitely a guy that I’ve followed for a long time.  To be able to fight in the same Octagon that night with one of the guys that’s a legend in the sport, it definitely raises the bar for me and makes me want to go out and fight even harder and have an impressive victory. It gives me the opportunity to challenge myself. I want to go out and try to out perform the champion. For me, it works in my favor because I remind myself to fight smart so I don’t make any careless mistakes.”

Training with the Blackzilians, Guillard will be ready for war at UFC 148 and we can expect to see some fireworks.
