Jones opens as -1300 favorite over Belfort at UFC 152

|

With all the craziness that has gone on over the last 24hrs you wouldn’t think anything else could happen – well it has. Jon Jones has opened as a -1300 favorite over his newly placed opponent Vitor Belfort in the main event at UFC 152.

Joey Oddessa (@MMAOdds) has dubbed Jones the favorite in the fight, with Belfort coming in at +700. In a conversation on Twitter between a few of MMA’s best journalists, it is clear that a fight has not had that much of a gap since Georges St-Pierre took on Matt Serra at UFC 69. Well, we all know what happened in that fight… that’s right, the champ lost via TKO in round one.

Odessa told MMAJunkie.com, “”You can’t make the line high enough for Jones vs. Belfort.”

Jones was expected to take on the number one contender in the light heavyweight division, Dan Henderson at UFC 151 on September 1. Unfortunately, Henderson was forced to withdraw from the fight due to injury. An unsuspecting opponent would step up and ask to fight Jones… Chael Sonnen. Jones turned around and said he would not fight Sonnen on 8 days notice, and the entire UFC 151 fight card was cancelled.  It was then announced that Jones vs. Machida II would be headlining the September 22 UFC 152 event. Just when we thought the drama was over, Machida turned down the fight with Jones. In a last ditch effort, the UFC placed Vitor Belfort in the main event of UFC 152 against Jones.

UFC 152 Jones vs. Belfort goes down on September 22 at Air Canada Center in Toronto, Canada.

Belfort (21-9) is on a 2 fight winning streak, however those two fights are in the middleweight division. He hasn’t fought at light heavyweight since he won the Cage Rage light heavyweight championship back in 2007. Since then he has gone 7-1 in the middleweight division, with his lone loss coming at the hands of current kingpin Anderson Silva.

Placing Belfort in against Jones, has left Alan Belcher without an opponent at UFC 153. Keep it locked to MMASucka.com to see what happens with that bout.
