Jones and Sonnen to be rival coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 17

|

How many times have you heard someone bicker about how The Ultimate Fighter just isn’t interesting anymore? That might stop for at least a twelve week period when UFC light-heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones and former middleweight title-challenger Chael Sonnen are placed all over the posters.

The two coaches were announced by the Los Angeles Times.

Filming for the upcoming season of the hit reality television series will commence on October 29 with it beginning to be aired in January. A consequence of this action is Sonnen’s return fight to 205-pounds will be scrapped and leaves Forrest Griffin without a dance partner for December.

Jones is in a situation that nobody has been in at light-heavyweight since the era of Chuck Liddell, the pool of viable, interesting challengers is shallow and losing water by the minute.

This left the door wide open for Chael Sonnen, fresh off his second defeat to UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva to swoop in and use his mouth to bargain a fight with the top-ranked light-heavyweight.

In fact, this was a fight that almost materialized. When Dan Henderson was forced out of his fight with Jones the Oregan-native as quick to raise his hand to step up and save the event but it was Jones that put the kibosh on those ideas.

The two coaches will go toe-to-toe on April 27 at an un-named event.
