Michael Bisping feels fight with Vitor Belfort "is a worthy Interim Title fight"

|

The UFC Middleweight division could be put on hold if the organization decides to throw together a couple super-fights for current champion Anderson Silva. Word on the street is, he would like to fight UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones in back-to-back fights. This would put the rest of the middleweight division at a bit of a stand still.

Kicking off 2013, Michael Bisping and Vitor Belfort are set to square off in the main event at UFC on FX 7 in Brazil. Bisping wrote on his website bisping.tv about a bunch of topics regarding the middleweight division.

Chris Weidman who is the most logical number one contender at 185lbs is hurt and unable to compete against Tim Boetsch at UFC 155 in December. Check out what Bisping had to say about that.

“I’ve got a lot to be thankful for, but the news that broke today that Chris Weidman is out for six months has really put a downer on the entire middleweight division. I feel really bad for him, especially as he’s already had a massively crappy month with Hurricane Sandy destroying his house. I bet he was really looking forward to a payday, and it’s always bad when an athlete is kept from making a living due to injuries. Never really met the guy, but of course I hope he makes a fast recovery.

Myself and Weidman are the No1 and No2 contenders to Anderson Silva’s middleweight title. And, yep, in that damn order!”

With Weidman out and Silva not defending his title in the proposed upcoming super-fight. The middleweight division could be without a title defense for upwards of 18-months.

“Anderson won’t be fighting until May – and even then it looks like it won’t be a middleweight title defense. According to my boss and their boss – Mr Dana F White – Anderson and GSP will have a super-fight in May and who knows what happens then? Anderson could win and then fight Jon Jones at light heavyweight in September and go the entire year – 18months and more – since defending the middleweight belt.”

That’s not accounting for possible injuries or even Silva losing in the super-fight.

“GSP could win or Anderson get hurt… the fight could even be moved to mid-summer for venue reasons… a million things could happen even when we get to May. Meanwhile, the middleweight division is in a complete holding pattern.”

“The Count” truly believes that he and his upcoming opponent at UFC on FX 7 Vitor Belfort are worthy of the Interim Title.

“I think me vs Vitor is a worthy Interim Title fight. Way more worthy than Urijah Favor’s 2354987th title shot and, and I would defend my Interim Title against all-comers and keep the division moving. And I think I can speak for Vitor, too, because if he kicks my arse in January, he will defend the belt too.

So… let’s kick off 2013 – which I think is going to be a huge year for the 185lbs – with an Interim Title fight on FX.”

Bisping definitely makes some valid points in his blog post. We will see whether this comes to fruition. If you would like to see it, “The Count” asks for you to send a tweet to @DanaWhite.
