Road to the Pro’s w/ Fraser Jordan #2 – Preparing to go pro

|

This week was a great week of training while frantically studying for finals. Balancing school and training is usually pretty easy but this is finals time and school came first.

I was able to get some good training in up here and watch some great fights on the weekend. Benson Henderson and Rory McDonald put on some amazing performances. As a fighter and a fan I always find it inspiring to see what the truly gifted athletes can do. I thought both guys put on great performances, especially Benson as he executed an amazing game plan and used his wrestling to put on a clinic.

My training this week consisted of a couple of BJJ classes at both pure martial arts and fitness under brown belt Jodey Ingalls, and CV fitness under purple belt Bill Fraser. I did some some kickboxing with Chase Ingalls and Oren Hanscomb at Pure Martial Arts and Fitness, as well as a wrestling class at CV fitness.

I was able to try out my new Reign 16oz gloves and was very impressed with the results. I generally travel between Campbell River and Courtenay to train which is about a 45 minute trip. In a small area like this, it is very important to get the training I need. I am trying to move to a small community right in between the two towns to make life a little easier.

With finals ending today, I am able to breathe again. I will take the next few weeks to train hard and enjoy friends and family. As someone who sees themselves as a martial artist first and a fighter second, I am always training, and trying to improve. I love these times between fights where I can add new things to my skill set. I don’t find it hard to be motivated to train as I love the sport, and fighting is the perk while the training and improvement is the important part.

I have spent most of my time recently kickboxing and doing jiu-jitsu. I find inspiration comes in waves, and my motivation to train drifts between boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and jiu-jitsu. I spent seven or so months last year where all I wanted to do was wrestle, and now I feel kickboxing and jiu-jitsu are the most compelling parts of training. This doesn’t mean that is what I will try to do in my next fight as almost every fight I have the things I work on most don’t seem to come out once in the cage. Hopefully next time I can change that as I would love to show off more of my skill set.
