UFC 165: Dana White reveals that Jon Jones narrowly avoided a doctor’s stoppage

While some people may feel that Jon Jones was lucky to walk away with a decision victory after his UFC 165 decision victory over Alexander Gustafsson, he was even luckier make it to the end of the fifth round at all. According to Dana White, who recounted the story to the folks at FOX Sports 1, the cageside doctor was ready to stop the fight after the 4th stanza. This was due to a cut above Jones’ right eye that he had sustained in the opening round.

As per Dana, “They took Jon out of the Octagon and took him straight to the hospital. He was in an absolute war; he’s got a massive cut. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but the doctors were going to stop the fight in the last round because of the cut. Jones begged him not to stop the fight. And from what I understand (referee John) McCarthy did too – pleaded with them not to stop the fight.”
