Singapore’s Syafiq Samad (2-0) and will be making his promotional debut as well, in a pro line-up consisting of multiple notable regional MMA talents.

Singapore’s Rebel FC Amateur MMA try-outs an instant success

Rebel Fighting Championship aims to breed and exhibit fighters situated in the Singaporean MMA scene. The Singapore-based promotion hopes to improve the pool of talent from the grassroots level, with a vision that involves giving local fighters as much combat experience as feasible.

“Specifically, what I saw lacking in Singaporean MMA was that there wasn’t any form of development for local talents. Even Singaporeans who have fought in other organizations, they didn’t really have any amateur fights. It’s almost like they’re jumping queues, which honestly, shouldn’t be the case in Mixed Martial Arts,” explained Rebel FC CEO, Justin Leong.

“We’re looking to give them a platform where they can get as much experience(s) as possible.”

Try-outs for places in the promotion’s amateur fight card took place at a local gym named Fight 360 last weekend, where 62 applicants from various local MMA gyms turned up to vie for an opportunity to compete on a big stage.

The Amateur MMA hopefuls were put through a series of assessments that culminated in sparring match-ups. They were first put to the test on their striking skills which involved pad work and more. Then, they scrambled over to the grappling station where their mat skills were on display. Sparring, later, played a pivotal role in determining who was in and who was out.

Fighters, meanwhile, from Impact MMA were undoubtedly the most impressive, as they managed to portray their respective all-round MMA facets.

Rebel Fighting Championship will be selecting seven Singaporean and seven Malaysian fighters to compete on the year end fight card. Results from the try-outs will be announced shortly.
