Raphael Assuncao vs. Bryan Caraway and Paige VanZant vs. Kailin Curran added to UFC Fight Night 54

A pair of bouts have been added to the UFC Fight Night 54 fight card. Bantamweights Rafael Assuncao will take on Bryan Caraway and promotional newcomers Paige VanZant and Kailin Curran will fight in strawweight action.

UFC officials announced the match-ups on Wednesday.

Assuncao (22-4) was expected to take on T.J. Dillashaw for the bantamweight title, however the rematch with Renan Barao is taking place. Assuncao is riding a six-fight winning streak, including a victory over the champion.

Caraway (19-6) is coming off back-to-back submission victories. At UFC 159 he earned ‘Submission of the Night’ honors with a slick guillotine choke against Johnny Bedford and most recently locked up a rear-naked choke submission against Erik Perez at UFC Fight Night 42 in June.

VanZant (3-1) was thought to be a part of the TUF 20 roster, however she was too young at just 20-years-old. She last fought in April 2013 where she earned a victory over Courtney Himes.

Curran (3-0) trains with Reign MMA in California which is home to top talent Mark Munoz, Jake Ellenberger and many more. Along with her undefeated professional record, Curran held a very successful amateur resume.

UFC Fight Night 54 goes down on October 4 from the Halifax Metro Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Headlining the event is a welterweight match between Rory MacDonald and Tarec Saffiedine.
