UFC Lightweight contender Gilbert Melendez didn’t only lose to Eddie Alvarez at UFC 188, but he also failed his post-fight drug test and has subsequently been suspended for one year from the date of the bout for violation of the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy.

Melendez was caught with testosterone metabolites that were present from an outside source according to MMAJunkie.com.

“El Nino” posted the following statement on UFC.com, “Regrettably, I tested positive in my post fight urine sample for UFC 188. I did not inject anything, but I am responsible and accept the consequences for the results. I will make sure I am better educated about the products I use and their implications. Going forward I will ensure no products I use will contain banned substances. I am sincerely apologetic to everyone who supports me, including my fans, sponsors and the UFC. I value your trust and respect and will do everything in my power to keep it.”

The former Strikeforce champ was expected to face-off against Al Iaquinta at UFC Fight Night 71 on July 15, however he has been removed from the card, as has Iaquinta.
