UFC on FOX 2 Officially Announced, Headlined by Two No.1 Contender Fights

|

Two number one contender fights have been officially announced via UFC.com, for UFC on FOX 2 scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012 at United Center in Chicago.

The main event will be a light heavyweight match of Rashad Evans versus Phil Davis to determine who will face the winner of current title holder Jon Jones versus Lyoto Machida.

This match up had been made once before for UFC 133, but Davis was forced out of the bout due to an injury, and was replaced by Tito Ortiz.  Evans defeated Ortiz, and is hungry for a title shot.

The co-main event matches two middleweight wrestling power houses turned MMA contenders.  Mark Munoz will fight Chael Sonnen for a shot at Anderson Silva’s title. The rumors of this fight had been swarming around the media for the past two weeks, and both Munoz and Sonnen had denied the fight had been set.  Now that it is now officially announced, they can focus on preparing for the fight.

Munoz is coming off an impressive performance from UFC 138 where he stopped Chris Leben by TKO as Leben was unable to answer the bell for the third round as he was unable to see due to a cut on his left eye.  Sonnen most recent fight was a dominant submission win against Brian Stann.

Munoz and Sonnen had battled once before, but not in MMA.  Munoz faced Sonnen in a College freestyle wrestling match, in which Munoz came out the winner.
