Demetrious Johnson to take on Joseph Benavidez for the inaugural UFC flyweight championship

|

Tonight in the main event at UFC on FX 3, Demetrious Johnson defeated Ian McCall by unanimous decision to move forward to the finals for the UFC flyweight championship.

The main event bouts pace was very similar to the first meeting at UFC on FX 2 in March, as Johnson controlled the pace early. Come the second round however, McCall seemed to turn the tables on Johnson (not in one judges eyes.)

At the end of the day Demetrious Johnson won on all three judges scorecards, 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28.

In Johnson’s post-fight speech he mentioned that McCall was the toughest fight of his career, “The toughest fighter I’ve ever fought in the UFC. I felt good. This time, I went back to old school and doing what I did in training for eight weeks. I’m looking forward to (the title fight). Joseph’s a killer. It’s going to be a great fight with me and him.”

Johnson’s (15-2-1) only loss in the UFC was to current UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. Look for Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez to go toe-to-toe for the first ever UFC flyweight championship later this year.
