Jamie Varner and Glieson Tibau scheduled to clash at UFC 164

|

Arizona’s comeback kid Varner will take on Brazil’s 155 lbs. monster Tibau in the latest lightweight bout added to UFC 164 in Milwaukie, WI.

MMA Junkie confirmed today through “knowledgeable sources.”

Jamie Varner and Glieson Tibau scheduled to clash at UFC 164

Jamie “C-4” Varner (21-7-1) is 2-1 in his current UFC stint, defeating hot prospect Edson Barboza on short notice in his first fight back before losing a Fight of the Night winner to Joe Lauzon, only to come back with a split decision victory over Melvin Guillard at UFC 155. A wrestle-boxer with heart for days, Varner has come a long way since washing out of the WEC by going 0-3-1 at the end of his tenure there. Training at the MMA Lab under the tutelage of John Crouch has been beneficial for helping Varner get his career back on track, and it will be interesting to see what improvements “C-4” has made to his game since the end of last year. Will he be able to make it two in a row against the Brazilian behemoth?

Gleison Tibau (27-9) is without a doubt the largest lightweight competing today, cutting a massive amount of weight in order to compete. The American Top Team product, like his opponent, is 2-1 in his last three fights, most recently defeating John Cholish at UFC on FX 8. Primarily a submission grapper, Tibau uses his bulk to muscle opponents to the canvas where he will either submit them or control them positionally en route to a decision. Will Tibau be able to achieve his first winning streak since 2011 at the expense of Varner?

UFC 164 takes place at Milwaukee, WI’s BMO Harris Bradley Centre on Aug. 31st, and has a lightweight title bout between champion Benson “Smooth” Henderson and Canadian challenger T.J. Grant scheduled as the main event. Stay tuned to MMASucka for more on this and other upcoming evnets!
