UFC Fight Night 29 Preliminary Report

|

UFC Fight Night 29 goes down tonight for the first time at the Ginásio José Corrêa in Barueri, Brazil.

As with previous events, it’ll be the Brazilians who will take center stage tonight with an eye to impress the home crowd and their bosses.

MMASucka.com will be providing you with LIVE results and analysis of the four preliminary fights that will be taking place tonight:

UFC Fight Night 29 Prelims (FOX Sports 1 at 5 p.m. ET, 2 p.m. PT)

Bout 1: Allan Patrick (10-0) vs. Garett Whiteley (8-0)

Report

First round commences and Patrick lands a takedown in the opening stages, but Whiteley recovers and they’re both back on their feet. As the fight progresses, it’s fairly evident that Patrick seems to be leaning in on a lot of his strikes, but he’s been pushing the pace well and has connected with several clean shots. Patrick’s also willing to try some fancy kicks and maneuvers in which the crowd responds in awe. Whiteley can’t seem to find his range. Whiteley then rushes in hoping to catch Patrick off-guard, but the Brazilian responds with a brilliantly timed left hook that sends his opponent tumbling onto the canvas. Patrick then continues to land punches, before the referee intervenes and halts the bout.

ResultAllan Patrick def. Garett Whiteley via TKO (Punches) at 3:54 of Round 1

Bout 2: Iliarde Santos (27-8-1, 1 NC) vs. Chris Cariaso (14-5)

Report

Cariaso starts the bout with left kicks from his southpaw stance. Still a feeling-out process of sorts for both fighters, as they exchange kicks in the opening stages. Santos lands a takedown after a smart trip and scrambles to half guard. He then slowly transitions to his opponent’s back, before losing position, enabling Cariaso to get back to his feet. As the round progresses, you can tell that both fighters’ striking offense is centered around Muay Thai. Santos, clearly the bigger fighter of the two, seems to be connecting with more heavier punches. In the last minute, Santos lands a second takedown, but does not have enough time to do anything effective.

In the 2nd frame, Santos continues to pressure Cariaso, forcing the latter to retreat away. Both fighters then start trading for a moment or two. Cariaso rocks Santos with a strong straight left, forcing the Brazilian to shoot for an unsuccessful takedown attempt in which Cariaso reverses and lands on top. As they get back to their feet, Santos is now bleeding , and Cariaso is finding more success with his strikes and combinations. Santos looks visibly tired and fatigued as Cariaso continues to pour it on towards the end of the round. Cariaso eventually lands a hard knee, following that up with some punches which hurts Santos, promptly forcing the referee to make a swift intervention.

Result: Chris Cariaso def. Iliarde Santos  via TKO (Punches) at 4:31 of Round 2

Bout 3: Yan Cabral (10-0) vs. David Mitchell (12-3)

Report

Mitchell utilizes his jab well, but not for long. Cabral grabs a hold of Mitchel’s back and drags him to the canvas. They both scramble with Cabral soon finding himself on top. However, Mitchell gives up his back for the second time, allowing Cabral to maneuver to full guard before looking to get full mount. He moves to side control instead, though, forcing Mitchell to give up his back momentarily and they both stand up. The round ends with Mitchell having a standing Guillotine choke attempt.

As the second stanza commenced, Cabral catches Mitchell early with a strong clean right. He attempts to take Mitchell’s back but ends up on top instead. Cabral then works for an arm triangle but is unsuccessful. Mitchell’s attempt at a kimura goes horribly wrong as Cabral reverses and ends up on top once again. Just a lackluster end to the round. Mitchell looks really tired from all the grappling exchanges.

In the third frame, Cabral gets a takedown after a minute or so. Mitchell, though, has been showing good defense from the bottom throughout, limiting his opponent’s options. Despite his good defense though, Cabral has been able to transition seamlessly either to full mount or to his opponent’s back. Cabral works for a Rear-Naked Choke, but Mitchell shrugs it off. Round 3 ends with Cabral on top in a bout that just displayed his fitnesse on the canvas.

ResultYan Cabral def. David Mitchell via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Bout 4: Ildemar Alcântara (19-5) vs. Igor Araujo (23-6, 1 NC)

Report

For about half of the first round, the fight took place against the cage with perhaps Alcantara getting the better of the two. The fight then hits the canvas, with Alcantara securing some dominant positions. Alcantara goes for a modified standing D’arce choke but Araujo escapes out of it,  finding himself in top position soon after. Araujo ends the round with some ground and pound.

Araujo pressures Alcantara well with his striking but gets taken down after a minute or so of the second frame. Araujo, however, gets taken down again but this time he reverses and ends up in half guard. The round ends with Araujo applying some effective ground and pound.

In the third and final stanza, Araujo works hard for a takedown and gets it, but leaves his hand open for a kimura in which Alcantara capitalizes on. Araujo fights out of that though, and continues delivering blows to his opponent from half guard. Alcantara goes for a heel hook, but is unsuccessful. The fight eventually ends with Araujo scoring some heavy ground and pound.

Result: Igor Araujo def. Ildemar Alcântara via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
