Nate Diaz KOs Gray Maynard in First Round to Conclude TUF 18

|

The main event for the TUF finale featured the Gray Maynard versus Nate Diaz rematch. In the first bout, back in 2010, Maynard was able to get the split decision en route to a very close victory. Following that fight, both fighters continued up the UFC ranks and had a shot at the title, but their most recent bouts were heart-breakers for both fighters and their fans.

Maynard took on TJ Grant at UFC 160, and was considered the favorite going into the fight. Grant proved that odds mean nothing and finished Maynard via TKO in devastating fashion. Simply put, no one has done that to the “Bully”. Maynard came into this fight looking to bounce back from a brutal loss, and hoped to go 2-0 against the younger Diaz brother.

Diaz did not fair any better in his last fight. Taking on Josh Thomson, Diaz took heavy shots throughout the fight before taking a killer head kick right to the forehead. The sound was loud, and as Thomson closed out the fight, the towel from the Diaz corner went airborne to the center of the octagon. Needless to say, Diaz took the first knockout loss of his career, but hoped to bounce back against Maynard.

In the first round, Diaz showed solid judo in scoring an early takedown. As expected, both fighters came out throwing bombs, with Diaz landing the first knockdown with a left hand. Diaz kept attacking and Maynard looked out, but was able to keep standing. After a few more huge blows to the face, the referee deemed Maynard out on his feet.

Diaz scored a very impressive first round win against an old foe, and seems ready to get back to winning. It will be interesting see who he battles next, and which division he chooses to fight at. For now, the Diaz camp will likely be celebrating heavily tonight.
