Video: Five questions with Syafiq Samad ahead of Rebel FC 1: Into the Lion’s Den

The 21-year-old is set to contest on home turf for the very first time, after appearances in DARE and PXC on foreign soil.

Labelled as Singapore’s top Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Syafiq “The Slasher” Samad’s (2-0) decision to get into Martial Arts has been well documented. A ganged slashing incident almost a decade ago has left scars on his body, reminding the Singaporean of the struggles he went through prior to becoming a professional fighter.

But from those hard times, circumstances have changed for the better, with Samad now being recognized as one of South-East Asia’s brightest prospects in Mixed Martial Arts.

Under the tutelage of coach Arvind Lalwani at a local gym named Juggernaut Fight Club, Syafiq Samad has gained MMA stardom in recent times with the various accolades and feats he has accomplished over the past years or so.

He was a staple in the national Amateur Boxing team, and was the first fighter from Singapore to have triumphed with Gold Medal in the Asian Muay Thai Championships.

Samad fights on Saturday’s Rebel FC 1: Into the Lion’s Den fight card, in a co-main event tilt opposite Korean Top Team’s Gyo Pyung Hwang (3-3). It’s no secret that the Korean will be a huge step-up in competition for the 21-year-old, but a win could propel the Singaporean to even greater heights.

Known for his raw skill and dexterity in the striking department, the Juggernaut Fight Club native has, however, been mixing things up in both of his pro MMA contests to date, catching his opponents by surprise with submission victories. That, without a doubt, bears testament to the 21-year-old’s fortitude in improving in all aspects of Mixed Martial Arts.

MMASucka.com recently caught up with the fighter ahead of his scheduled match-up this weekend.
