Biggest Winners and Losers from UFC Fight Night 61

|

UFC Fight Night: Bigfoot vs. Mir (UFN 61) was live from the Ginásio Gigantinho in Porto Algere, Brazil on February 22, 2015.

The main event was originally supposed to be between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans and former title challenger Glover Teixeira, but like many MMA events these days, an injury took place and forced Teixeira out. The new main event was now a 5-round bout between longtime UFC heavyweight and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir and Antônio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva.

Check out our biggest winners and losers from UFN 61 below.

Frank Mir:

Frank Mir was on the longest losing streak of his career entering UFN 61. The former UFC Heavyweight Champion was in search of his first win since 2011 and he would get just that. Mir was able to pick up the TKO victory at 1:40 of Round 1. The decision is ultimately up to him, but Mir has nothing else to prove and going out on an impressive win would be a great way to cap off a memorable career.

Sam Alvey:

Sam Alvey headed into UFN 61 coming off of an odd knockout win over Dylan Andrews. Alvey was set to take on ‘TUF: Brazil’ winner Cezar Ferreira. Ferreira has had his ups and downs, but looked like a solid prospect and was the favorite over Alvey. Alvey proved the odds makers wrong with a knockout victory at 3:34 of Round 1. The 28-year-old is knocking people out and doing so with a smile on his face on his way to moving closer to the top 15.

Antônio Silva:

Like Mir, Silva was on the roughest stretch of his career with having not picked up a win in his last three fights. Unfortunately, ‘Bigfoot’s night would not have a happy ending. The Brazilian was knocked out for the third time in his last four fights. ‘Bigfoot’ has also had a great heavyweight career, but with the damage he has taken, the recent ban on TRT, and his aging body, one must believe that this could be the end of a career or at the very least, close to it.

William Macário:

At just 23-years-old, William Macário was looking like one of the better prospects in the welterweight division coming off of ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2’. ‘Patolino’ ultimately lost in the finals, but bounced back with an impressive beat down of, at the time, a 34-fight veteran in Bobby Voelker. At UFN 61, ‘Patolino’ was a huge favorite against Matt Dwyer, but those odds proved to mean nothing. In another disappointing performance, the Brazilian suffered from the fate of a highlight reel superman punch knockout. Now at 1-3 in the UFC, the bright prospect has gotten off to a much slower start than expected.
