Newly crowned UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (15-1) underwent successful surgery on Tuesday to treat a double hernia. The news was first reported by MMAJunkie.com. A timeline for his return is not yet known, though it’s expected that it’ll be a few weeks before he can return to training.

This isn’t the only injury that “The Nigerian Nightmare” dealt with as of late. Following his most recent fight against Tyron Woodley earlier this month at UFC 235 in Las Vegas, Usman revealed that he had fought through a fractured foot. His manager, Ali Abdelaziz, has said that the injury won’t require surgery, however.

Title Fight vs. Woodley

Despite the injuries he’s seemingly had to deal with, Usman put on the performance of his life against Woodley in the co-main event of UFC 235. Having already compiled a 9-0 UFC record up until that point, Usman was well deserving of a title shot.

And when the fight began, he proved that he belonged amongst the elite at 170 pounds. Over the course of five rounds, Usman out-struck, and out-wrestled Woodley. In the end, he scored a dominant one-sided unanimous decision victory.

What Lies Ahead

Following the win over Woodley, Usman expressed his interest in being an active champion. That plan is likely on hold momentarily as the champion heals up from recent injuries.

When he does return, however, he has a fight waiting for him. UFC President Dana White has said that Colby Covington would be next in line to challenge for the title. Usman has seemed nothing but content with Covington being his next opponent.
