Walkout Song: The Metal Edition

Walkout songs in MMA are not as important as it is in the world of professional wrestling. Fighters usually prefer to select their own walkout music and their musical tastes are as diverse as their backgrounds and fighting styles. Nonetheless, quarantine affords us the chance to think about new walkout songs that would go well with fighters. As a metalhead, I thought it would be fun to see if I could come up with a playlist that would work for some fighters.

Alexander Gustafsson – The Way of Vikings by Amon Amarth

This match between song and fighter inspired this list. Gustafsson is proud of his Viking heritage. The lyrics of the song tell the tale of two men who are best friends but spar hard to the astonishment of onlookers. You would be hard-pressed to find a walkout song as tailor-made for MMA as this one by Amon Amarth.

Demetrious Johnson – Operation Ground and Pound by Dragonforce

Demetrious Johnson, also known as Mighty Mouse, is likely the best ever in his weight class. His biggest asset is his ridiculous speed. Outside of the cage, Mighty Mouse spends a lot of free time playing video games. Dragonforce is a speed metal band. Their lead guitarist Herman Li, plays at speeds of up to 18 notes per second. And guess what, they’re into gaming as well.

Mighty Mouse’s biggest highlight-reel moment was his submission of Ray Borg. It was the mind-blowing speed of Mighty Mouse that will forever be remembered. it is only fitting that the fastest mixed martial artist has a walkout song made by the fastest speed metal band in the world.

Conor McGregor – Whiskey in the Jar by Metallica

Metallica is an American band. It seems almost sacrilege to suggest a band that is not Irish for Conor McGregor as a walkout song. Having said that, as of this writing McGregor is spending a significant amount of time promoting his own brand of whiskey, Proper 12. And if there was ever a song that oozed the Irish spirit, it would be Whiskey in the Jar. Who better to take an Irish folk song to America than Metallica? And who better to take an Irish whiskey to America than Conor?

Angela Hill – Overkill by Motorhead

This is self-evident. Angela Hill is a known metalhead herself. And by a happy coincidence, her fighter nickname is Overkill, most likely a tribute to the 1980s band of the same name.

Motorhead has already made a name for themselves in the world of professional wrestling having provided a walkout song to Triple H and one for Evolution. Sadly, Lemmy is no longer with us. But Motorhead may well find themselves with a new wave of fans if Hill uses this as her walkout song. Given how often she fights, we are more likely to see this happen.
