After 17 fights inside the UFC octagon, former two-time title challenger and The Ultimate Fighter 14 champion, John Dodson has been released from the UFC.
Damon Martin of MMAFighting.com dropped the news on Friday and Dodson’s manager, Ricky Kottenstette released a statement later in the day.
John Dodson released from the UFC
“We are excited to see what other offers are out there for John,” Kottenstette said. “John is 100 percent committed to his fight career and he’s not diminished in his skill set whatsoever.
“John has fought the absolute best in the world in two weight classes and he’s still more than ready face elite competition. We look forward to talking to any and all promotions to find John the best home for his future.”
Dodson (21-12) made a splash on the scene after winning the fourteenth season of The Ultimate Fighter. In the finale of that iteration, Dodson knocked out T.J. Dillashaw in the first round to be crowned the champion.
Following that impressive performance up a weight class, Dodson returned to his home at flyweight. After two victories in a row, he earned a title shot against Demetrious Johnson.
“The Magician” fought “Mighty Mouse” not once, but twice, taking the champ to decisions on both occasions. Unfortunately he did not get the judges nod either time.
In 2016, Dodson made the move back up to 135-pounds where he rode out his tenure in the UFC.
The 35-year-old most recently lost a decision to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 252 in August, bringing his UFC record to 10-7.
