UFC 258 Main Event

It’s third time lucky at UFC 258. Having been scheduled for July and December previously, the UFC 258 main event sees two former teammates square off for the welterweight strap. COVID-19 and injuries have played havoc with this fight previously, so let’s hope it goes ahead this time.

Since working and training together, Usman has switched camps to work with Trevor Wittman. Wittman is without a doubt one of the best coaches out there and will have certainly added facets to Usman’s game that Burns won’t have seen before. Usman looked his usual dominant self in his first fight working with Wittman. At UFC 251, Usman defeated late notice challenger, Jorge Masvidal 50–45, 50–45 and 49–46 to regain his belt. This win extended his undefeated run to a phenomenal 16 fights.

Gilbert Burns has been on a tear since moving up to welterweight. Returning to 170lbs in 2019, Burns has gone 4-0, notching two performance of the night bonuses. Most recently and most impressively was his victory against Tyron Woodley. Gaining the unanimous decision victory, 50–45, 50–44 and 50–44, Burns proved his a big, big problem at 170lbs.

UFC 258 Card – Ones to Watch

  • Maycee Barber vs. Alexa Grasso
The return of ‘The Future’, Maycee Barber. She faces Alexa Grasso, who herself has been on a strange run of form. Exchanging wins and losses over her past seven fights, Grasso will be looking to put a run together with a win over Barber.
  • Pedro Munhoz vs. Jimmie Rivera
Perennial contenders, Munhoz and Rivera will throw down and look to make waves in the bantamweight division with a win. Since his knockout of Cody Garbrandt in 2019, Munhoz has back-to-back losses. Rivera is coming off a unanimous decision victory against Cody Stamann and will look to put back-to-back wins together for the first time since 2017.
  • Belal Muhammad vs. Dhiego Lima
Muhammad looks for his fourth win in a row and his ninth UFC win overall at UFC 258. Ranked #13 at the moment, a win could catapult him into the top 10. Similarly, Dhiego Lima is also looking for his fourth straight win. Unranked at the moment, Lima will be looking to break into the top 15 with a win.
  • Gillian Robertson vs. Miranda Maverick
In what is one of the most intriguing fights on the entire UFC 258 card, Gillian Robertson looks to stunt the progress of Miranda Maverick. Robertson dropped her last fight to Talia Santos so will be looking to bounce back. Maverick is only 1-0 in the UFC but impressed massively on her debut with doctors stoppage. She’ll look to get a big name on her resume with a win here.
