Cody Garbrandt is back and healthy. After being forced to withdraw from his December clash for the flyweight belt due to a positive COVID-19 test, Garbrandt is ready to compete again in the bantamweight division.

Cody Garbrandt vs. Rob Font in the Works for May 22

Former bantamweight champion Garbrandt is slated to face the surging ranked no. 3 bantamweight Rob Font in a five-round main event on May 22. As of this writing, a location or venue for the bout has not yet been confirmed. The news was broke by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

Cody Garbrandt

Garbrandt (12-3) was last seen in action at UFC 250 when he knocked out Rafael Assuncao in spectacular fashion last summer, snapping a three-fight losing streak dating back to 2017. After delivering a KO of the year candidate, Garbrandt focused his efforts on capturing the UFC flyweight crown and was granted a title shot scheduled for UFC 255 against Deiveson Figueiredo last November. Unfortunately, the fight never materialized as Garbrandt was forced to pull out of the bout after testing positive for COVID-19.

A fight against Figueiredo does not seem to be in the foreseeable future as the flyweight champion will be fighting Brandon Moreno in a title fight rematch in June after the two fought to a draw in a back-and-forth all-out action fight at UFC 256 in December. However Garbrandt has suggested that the 125-pound flyweight title is not out of the equation but for the time being, he will be focusing on the 135 bantamweight division. Garbrandt will be eager to continue his winning ways after a rough couple of years and look to recapture the UFC bantamweight belt.

Rob Font

Font (18-4) has rapidly surged up the bantamweight rankings after defeating Marlon Moraes with a violent first-round TKO finish in December. Part of the New England Cartel team alongside Calvin Kattar, Font is on a three-fight winning streak including unanimous decision wins over Sergio Pettis and Ricky Simon before finishing Moraes. Font will be looking to extend his winning streak. A win here would definitely propel Font into a true contender for a title shot.

With so much competitiveness at the upper echelons of the bantamweight division, either fighter could be looking at a potential title eliminator as Font is ranked #3 and Garbrandt ranked #4 according to the official UFC rankings. However, with TJ Dillashaw vs. Cory Sandhagen slated to happen, either man may need one more win to get a chance to compete for the belt. Many people believe Sandhagen has already done enough to warrant a title shot after defeating both Moraes and Frankie Edgar with two breathtaking knockout of the year contenders.
