Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire was expecting to defend his Bellator lightweight championship in the first quarter of 2022, but due to a series of unfortunate events, he was forced to completely change his plans.

Pitbull Freire regain lightweight gold this past November when he took a trip to Ireland and defeated Peter Queally via second-round knockout. This was a rematch for their first meeting, which happened back in May when Brazilian lost due to a doctor stoppage. Bellator informed Freire to begin his preparations for a title defense set for February. Unfortunately, he suffered a groin injury during the training, pushing the fight back to Match. And it wasn’t the end of bad news.

In his recent interview with MMA Fighting Pitbull Freire said that after resuming his training he injured his heel and then began physical therapy to recover from both injuries. Later he caught H3N2, known as influenza, and was sick for a week. After recovery, he tested positive for COVID – 19, which forced him to cancel the fight.

Pitbull Freire didn’t know who will be his next opponent, but he narrowed it down to top-ranked lightweights, Sidney Outlaw and Brent Primus. The first one defeated Myles Jury and Adam Piccolotii while the second, who was a former champion himself, recently defeated Benson Henderson

Currently, any plans for the Brazilian fighter are on hold, as more health issues came: a cervical herniated disc, bursitis, and shoulder tendinitis.  Freire said that he believes that he simply has bad luck, as a few days ago he experienced a nightmarish night with included puking and he suspected an intestinal infection. Also, his car broke just after that.
