Unblemished featherweight standout Movsar Evloev has announced a surprising game plan ahead of a potential title clash with Alexander Volkanovski.
Movsar Evloev’s Run In UFC Utterly Dominant
Making his promotional debut all the way back in 2019, Movsar Evloev has beaten every single opponent put in front of him almost effortlessly. Rattling off nine wins in a row in the Octagon, the Greco-Roman wrestling specialist has claimed victories over 145-lb contenders such as Dan Ige, Diego Lopes, Arnold Allen and former bantamweight king Aljamain Sterling.
Now ranked at No. 4 on the UFC’s official featherweight rankings, Movsar Evloev appears to be on an enviable crash course toward title contention. As it stands, the only people above him on the ladder are the aforementioned Lopes (who just lost at UFC 314), and a pair of newly-minted lightweights in Max Holloway and previous champion Ilia Topuria.
Movsar Evloev Makes Shocking Statement on Potential Championship Fight
At 19-0, Movsar Evloev is easily one of the best fighters in the entire featherweight class. Utilizing his expert-level grappling abilities, the Russian brings a suffocating style to his matches, shutting down his opponent’s movement with his wrestling and wearing on their gas tank.
While this plan of action has allowed him to remain perfect in his professional career, Movsar Evloev has often been put under scrutiny for his lack of offense, choosing to, instead, rely on his ground game to win his bouts, even at the cost of fan backlash.
Willing to stand more on the feet in his next trip to the cage, however, the Ingushetia native has recently stated that he intends to duke it out with reigning featherweight title holder, Volkanovski, should the UFC grant him the opportunity. Speaking on the Overdogs Podcast, Evloev remarked his bold idea to strike it out with the decorated Aussie, even going as far to say he won’t be the one to engage in the wrestling first.
“I can promise them that I’m not going to take down anyone if they (the UFC) give me a title shot,” Movsar Evloev began. “I’m not going to go there first. If they (Volkanovski) try to take me down, OK, I’ll accept this, but I’m not going to go first. I’ll just go straight striking. So let’s see.”
Volkanovski Ready for Fight if Movsar Evloev Comes Calling
Volkanovski himself also looks to be on board with the pairing. After returning home, “The Great” was interviewed by Fox Sports Australia, who asked the two-time featherweight apex who would be up first for his latest title defense.
“I did mention Movsar [Evloev,”, Volkanovski began. “He is undefeated. I like the fact that he’s undefeated and still one of the younger generation. I think for the legacy, that would still mean so much, but is that what the fans want? Is that what the UFC wants? I don’t know. I’m going to need to talk to them and we’ll see what happens.”
