Kenny Florian Facing Retirement?

Kenny Florian may have walked to the cage for the final time this past October when he unsuccessfully challenged for the UFC featherweight championship.

A herniated disk in the back of the only man to compete in four different weight-classes has put his fighting career in jeopardy following a weight lifting accident in the gym.

Kenny Florian Facing Retirement?

“Ken-Flo” spoke with the Boston Herald today to address the issue.

It’s possible, unfortunately. I’ve kind of been going back-and-forth with some of the doctors, so it’s possible. I’m going to see. As of right now, obviously I can’t compete and train like I was at all. I’m just kind of doing what I can and hoping that things heal up and get better. I’m just kind of in a holding pattern. That’s why I decided to do this commentary for the time being and take this next six months to really heal up and try to make some money on the side. It sucks. The last couple of months I’ve just been figuring out what’s going on and what I’m going to do.

Florian has been a staple of the UFC product for years now, beginning as a middleweight he quickly made the transition to welterweight before eventually finding a natural home at lightweight. He would challenge for 155-pound gold on two occasions falling to Sean Sherk and BJ Penn before a two-bout run in the featherweight division.

It’s been accepted amongst the MMA community that when the jiu-jitsu practitioner chooses to hang up his gloves that he will make an easy transition over to the commentary booth or working with Zuffa in an on-screen fashion between UFC Tonight and various other programming that will be spread across the FOX networks.

I would hate for this to be the end for Florian who is only 35-years-old and the southpaw could provide us with many more interesting match-ups between lightweight and featherweight but if this is the end I’m sure he will have no issues as a television personality.
