Jon Jones arrested for DUI

The meteoric rise of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has hit the wall. Well, factually speaking it was a pole and Jones wrapped his Bentley around it.

Celebrity gossip-mongers TMZ are reporting that Jones was arrested on the scene early this morning in Binghamton, NY, where Jones totaled his Bentley after an encounter with said pole.

Jones had been receiving an unprecedented PR push from the UFC as a squeaky-clean poster-boy athlete, with the promotion even going so far as to sponsor Jones in his last title defense against former teammate Rashad Evans.

TMZ reports that Jones was taken into custody by the Broome County Sheriff’s office and charged with DUI before being bailed out by his mom. Ironically, Jones had gone through police training with that exact office earlier this year.

UFC has yet to release a statement or indicate how this will affect the planned Jones title fight against Dan Henderson in September, but obviously Dana and the Fertittas have to be less than enthused at this turn of events for the man they’ve spent millions portraying as a wholesome superhero. One would have to expect a massive PR campaign to repair Jones’ image.

Jones’ manager Malki Kawa issued the following statement:

I can confirm that Jon Jones was arrested early this morning on suspicion of DUI. While the facts of this situation are still being gathered and situated, First Round Management fully supports Jon and we are asking for fans and media to respect the privacy of Jon and his family during this time.

More details as they become available.
