The heavyweight title fight that folks have been waiting for has finally been announced. Junior dos Santos will defend his heavyweight championship against former title holder, Cain Velasquez at an unnamed December 29 UFC event.
UFC President Dana White confirmed the match-up to reporters following the UFC 150: Henderson vs. Edgar II post-fight press conference in Denver, Colorado.
Dos Santos (15-1) is undefeated in his UFC career – going 9-0 against top notch opponents. This fight with Velasquez will be a rematch of their main event battle at UFC on FOX 1, where he took the belt in a bout which only lasted 64-seconds. Dos Santos has since defended his title against Frank Mir at UFC 146 back in May.
Velasquez (10-1) impressed the critics his last time inside the octagon. He served as the co-main event at UFC 146 against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and put on a bloody show. He immediately took Silva down and bloodied him up with punches and elbows until referee Josh Rosenthal stepped in to stop the action. Even though he had lost the belt to dos Santos one fight prior, the UFC felt his performance against Silva was enough to earn a title shot.
The year end show has yet to be formally announced, however the dos Santos vs. Velasquez bout is expected to headlined what is likely penned UFC 155 at either the MGM Grand Garden Arena or Mandalay Bay Events Center.
