Hill victorious at SFS, UFC call to follow?

|

The capacity crowd at Hamilton Place Theatre left the venue at last night’s Score Fighting Series show calling out Josh Hill’s name. The fighter known as “Gentleman”, hopes the next person to call his name is UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

Hill dominated John “Haggis Basher” Fraser en route to a clear-cut unanimous decision. The bout was billed as a clash between the top two bantamweights in Canada, but the fight belonged to Hill from the opening bell as he repeatedly took down Fraser and unleashed furious ground and pound to keep Fraser on his back.

When asked in the post-fight interview what lay ahead for him, Hill smiled and asked the crowd “what do you guys think?”, which was answered with a chorus of “UFC” chants.

The co-main event delivered fireworks and was the consensus pick for “fight of the night” as Jesse “The Body Snatcher” Ronson lived up to his nickname, delivering thunderous shots to the mid-section of Alex Ricci before picking up a unanimous decision victory. Ronson came charging out of the gates and floored Ricci twice early. Ricci showed poise and good defense in bringing himself back into the fight, but ultimately it was not enough as Ronson improved his record to 11-2.

Roufusport’s Rick Glenn made his SFS debut as he was able to pick up a victory over Nova Scotia’s Tristan Johnson. Glenn’s striking looked as crisp as one would expect from a Duke Roufus-trained fighter, but with Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren in his corner Glenn also showed off his ground game in repeatedly taking down Johnson and pounding him out for a round 2 TKO victory. After the fight, Glenn called out Canadian favourite Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki for the next SFS show, set to take place in October in Sarnia, Ontario.
