A middleweight match-up between top contenders Tim Boetsch and Chris Weidman has been added to the main card of UFC 155.
The bout was confirmed by UFC officials.
Headlined by a Heavyweight championship scrap between reigning champion Junior Dos Santos and former title-holder Cain Velasquez, UFC 155 is set to take place on December 29th in Las Vegas.
Chris Weidman recently secured himself a place in the upper echelon of the UFC’s Middleweight division, with an impressive TKO win over top contender Mark Munoz in July. Unbeaten in his stint with the world’s top MMA promotion thus far, Weidman has been knocking on the door for a title-shot all year but will instead face Tim Boetsch, a man who’s undefeated ever since dropping to 185-lbs.
He stated on UFC.com,
“I think I’m the number-one contender in the division but with Anderson not fighting for the rest of 2012, I want to stay busy and keep getting better,” said Weidman. “I think I’m the best middleweight in the world and I’m going to prove it against another top contender.”
Boetsch, an accomplished wrestler, was last seen at UFC 149 when he shocked the MMA scene by handing former Bellator champion Hector Lombard his first defeat in 25 professional fights. Prior to the victory, Boetsch secured a spectacular come-from-behind TKO victory over former Middleweight title challenger, Yushin Okami, at UFC 144 in Japan. ‘The Barbarian’ is 8-1 in his last 9 fights, with the lone set-back coming against Phil Davis at UFC 123.
As it stands, here’s the updated fight card for UFC 155:
- Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez (For the UFC Heavyweight title)
- Tim Boetsch vs. Chris Weidman
- Forrest Griffin vs. Chael Sonnen
- Joe Lauzon vs. Gray Maynard
- Phil De Fries vs. Matt Mitrione
