Rumors have been rampant for weeks about when the much-anticipated Frankie Edgar versus Jose Aldo bout for the UFC Featherweight Championship would take place.
On FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight”, it was announced that the match-up would headline the promotion’s annual Superbowl weekend extravaganza, scheduled to take place Feb.2 at a yet to be determined venue.
It’s been an injury-ridden year for Jose Aldo, as he was forced out of bouts at UFC 149 and UFC 153 against Eric Koch and Frankie Edgar respectively. His last bout was in January at UFC 142 where he successfully defended his world championship against Alpha Male product, Chad Mendes.
Edgar as well has had a disappointing 2012, going 0-2. Edgar lost his world lightweight championship in February to Benson Henderson, as well as the rematch in August, both in close controversial decisions.
Pressure began mounting on Edgar to make the move to featherweight after losing his lightweight championship, and finally after two straight losses he decided to drop down.
