If you thought the relationship between Dan Henderson and Chael Sonnen was strained after Sonnen leapfrogged Henderson for a title shot in the UFC light heavyweight division, you were wrong.
Sonnen is currently in Las Vegas coaching ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ reality show opposite Jon Jones, and today announced he will bring in Henderson as an assistant coach to help train his group of aspiring fighters on ‘TUF’.
“We’re on great terms (and) we’ve always been on great terms,” Sonnen told MMAJunkie.com of his relationship with ‘Hendo’.
Sonnen and Henderson have been friends and training partners for years. The two men both train out of Team Quest in Portland, Oregon. According to Sonnen, Henderson has seniority over him in the gym when they train together in Portland, and nothing will change when Henderson comes to Las Vegas.
“You’ve got to understand, what Dan and I have got is like the military,” Sonnen said. “Our gym has got an order, and Dan is one of the coaches. He’s above me. I don’t talk back to Dan, and if Dan wants to say something, that would be the way it is.”
On top of serving as an assistance coach for ‘Team Sonnen’, Henderson is going to help train and corner Sonnen for his light heavyweight title fight against Jones, which is currently scheduled for April 27.
It is unknown at this time if Henderson plans to serve as an assistant coach for a few weeks or if he spend the entire filming of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ in Las Vegas.
