Firas Zahabi and Tri-Star gym have long been a staple of mixed martial arts in Canada. Home to decorated UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, Tri-Star was to go-to place for any Canadian talent looking to make a serious splash in the mixed martial arts world.
Montreal is the home to some of Canada’s best boxers and amateur wrestlers, and having the many facilities in close range only furthered the gym’s abilities to produce talent.
Now that the world has caught wind of Tri-Star, the great immigration of talent to Montreal has begun. Fighters from all over the world make the trek to Montreal when it comes time for fight-camp. Welterweight phenomenon Rory MacDonald, Bellator lightweight title contender Rick Hawn, and Ultimate Fighter finalist Mike Ricci are just a few of the names who regularly train in Montreal.
When you combine the level of talent with the working relationship they have with Jackson’s gym in Albuquerque, NM, there is simply no other gym which has the well-rounded ability to produce quality fighters.
And at the forefront of it all is Firas Zahabi. His abilities as a trainer are second to none, and he mastered the science of a training camp, which is no easy task. For this, MMASucka has named Zahabi the 2012 trainer of the year.
