It’s official, Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen will square off for the light heavyweight championship on Saturday April 27 at UFC 159 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
UFC officials announced the match-up on Wednesday, along with the TUF 17 cast.
The two will serve as coaches on the latest installment of The Ultimate Fighter series, which premieres on Tuesday January 22 with a two-hour premiere.
Many critics have complained that Sonnen will receive a title shot, not only at a new weight class, but also following a loss to UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.
Sonnen (27-12-1) is one of the sports most outspoken figures and it has deemed him well. Including this fight against Jones, “The American Gangster” will have fought in a UFC title fight in three of his last five fights. He fought the aforementioned Silva twice, but both times falling short.
UFC President Dana White made it clear that Sonnen got the nod to take on Jones because he stepped up when no one else would.
