Benson Henderson expected to defend title against Gilbert Melendez at UFC on FOX 7

|

The lightweight title is expected to be up for grabs at UFC on FOX 7 in April. Current UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson will put his belt on the line against the Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez.

MMAFighting.com first reported the champion vs. champion match-up.

Henderson (18-2) is on an eight fight winning streak, with two of those fights being title defences. Most recently the champ battered and bruised Nate Diaz en route to a judges decision at UFC on FOX 5 this past December.

Melendez (21-2) was on scene at that fight and wants to avenge the loss of his ‘homie’.

The Strikeforce champ hasn’t lost since 2009 and is riding a seven fight win streak. He won the Strikeforce belt against Rodrigo Damm in 2009 and unified it against Josh Thomson at December of that same year. Since then has gone on to defend the strap an outstanding four times.

UFC on FOX 7 is expected to go down on April 20 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
