Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman expected to headline UFC 162

|

Anderson Silva will welcome Chris Weidman back to the Octagon on July 6 as they are expected to headline UFC 162 on Independence Day weekend.

The match-up was confirmed as official today by Newsday.com with UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.

Silva (33-4) has been running through every fighter he has stepped inside the cage with and is easily the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Arguably the greatest MMA fighter in history, as he is currently riding a 17-fight winning streak. Most recently he stepped up on short notice to fight at 205-pounds against Stephan Bonnar and dominated him at this past October’s UFC 153 event.

“The Spider” will defend his middleweight title for the first time since last July when he TKO’d Chael Sonnen in the highly anticipated rematch at UFC 148.

Weidman (9-0) has been called the number one contender for Silva’s middleweight title for some time now, however an injury set him back. The former NCAA Division I All-American wrestler is coming off a dominant performance at this past July’s UFC on FUEL TV event against Mark Munoz.

UFC 162 is expected to go down on July 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
