John Maguire vs. Mitch Clarke booked for UFC 161

|

A lightweight tilt has been added to the UFC 161 fight card, as former welterweight fighter John Maguire will make his lightweight debut against Canadian Mitch Clarke.

Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press announced the match-up on Wednesday and UFC officials later confirmed.

Maguire (18-5) is looking to get back in the win column, as he dropped his last two fights. Most recently losing to Matt Riddle at UFC 154 this past November, prior to that he lost to John Hathaway at UFC on FUEL TV 5.

“The One” debuted with the organization at UFC 153 and won his first two matches. However, has gone 2-2 in his four UFC fights.

Clarke (9-2) has lost both of his promotional bouts, which were his first two losses of his career. The pride of Saskatoon lost his promotional debut at UFC 140 against John Cholish and hurt his leg in the first round of his UFC 149 loss against Anton Kuivanen.

He trains with lightweight champion Benson Henderson at The MMA Lab in Arizona and told MMASucka a couple months back that he was aiming for a late spring, early summer return, so this fight with Maguire works out perfectly.

UFC 161 will be the organizations first trip to Winnipeg, Canada. It will take place at the MPS Centre and will be headlined by a interim UFC bantamweight title fight between Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland. Also featured on the Winnipeg card are Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Dan Henderson vs. Rashad Evans and Soa Palelei vs. Stipe Miocic.
