Damon Martin of Bleacher Report is reporting that Urijah Faber and Phil Davis are taking some big steps in order to help move amateur MMA forward. They have announced an exclusive website dedicated to helping amateur fighters called MMADraft.com, and that they will be hosting a first ever football-style combine in conjunction with the UFC on July 6th as part of the annual Las Vegas Fan Expo. According to Faber:
“It’s the first time we’re going to do it and it’s going to be limited to 100 people. We’re going to have a bunch of professional fighters there. We’re going to have sports psychologists, physical therapists, and strength and conditioning guys. We’ve got a whole curriculum that we’re going to run through with these prospects and take their time. Some of it will be comparable testing to what they use in football, soccer and basketball combines and some will be unique to the MMA world. It’s going to be an awesome ordeal.”
Faber also stated that the combine will only be open to amateur athletes, and promises the experiment will be “data-heavy,” and will be open to managers, media, and others on the business side of mixed martial arts. For more information on the participating in the combine, and to sign up for MMA Draft, please visit MMADraft.com
