The main event for UFC 163 was a featherweight title match, pitting champion and human buzzsaw Jose “Scarface” Aldo against the durable and deceivingly technical “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung. Would the unstoppable force Aldo be able to get past the immovable object Jung and retain his title?
Round 1 was not quite what was expected to happen. Aldo seemed more cautious, and allowed Jung to hang around in his mid-range at the start of the stanza and eat leg kicks instead of walking the Korean fighter down. Aldo got a little wilder closer to the end, missing on a spinning wheel kick to flying knee combination. Still, with 5 minutes down in the fight, Aldo appeared to up 10-9.
Round 2 found “The Korean Zombie” opening up a little bit more, but Aldo returning to the conservative style he used for the majority of the first period. Concerns started to arise about “Scarface’s” right leg, as he did not seem to be using it much for his low kicks. Jose Aldo started to pump the jab more as the round wore on, but Chan Sung Jung was not responding in kind enough to steal the stanza. To seal the deal, Aldo scored a rare takedown at the end of the round win it 10-9.
The third round saw Aldo score another takedown early, off an attempted flying knee from Jung. Still, “The Korean Zombie” was put into his proper element now on the ground, and did his best to keep the fight interesting. However, it was not enough to keep this round from falling into the hands of “Scarface.”
The championship rounds began with “The Korean Zombie” going into attack mode, getting in close with knees and uppercuts, trying to make a “phonebooth fight.” Unfortunately, Jung’s shoulder appeared to separate after landing a punch, and that gave the champion the opportunity to step into the next gear and finish his challenger with kicks to the injured shoulder and follow-up punches to retain his title.
Jose Aldo def. Chan Sung Jung by TKO (kicks and punches), 2:00 R4 to retain the UFC Featherweight Championship.
