Let’s be honest: Every now and then it’s fun to get down into the nitty-gritty statistics and see if we can’t perform some MMAth. It helps us analyze future fights and make predictions based on previous history. Fans of all sports do it, so why can’t we? It can help us look for potential trends in a fighter as well. So, with thanks to Sherdog and FightMetric.com for the raw data, let’s examine the main event of the upcoming UFC 165: Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson.
Stats for Suckas: Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson
As much as people like to talk about Alexander Gustafsson’s footwork, the statistics show that he’s still fairly hittable. While he’s yet to be knocked out, it’s still something that gives Jon Jones an advantage, as he has used barrages of strikes to set up submissions in the past. Additionally, Gustafsson, like many Scandinavian fighters, is not what you could call a “strong” wrestler, whereas Jones – in MMA terms – is. I don’t see “The Mauler” getting finished, but I do see Jones grinding him down for a unanimous decision victory.
