There were a total of six finishes at this past Friday’s ONE FC 11: Total Domination, the latest installment of ONE FC’s which went down at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in front of a packed audience of near 12,000.
Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes (15-3) became the promotion’s undisputed Bantamweight champ, after going five rounds with ROAD FC vet Soo Chul Kim (7-5). The Brazilian’s takedown offense was on point as he took Kim down multiple times throughout the fight. Kim, who was otherwise interested in just a striking battle, eventually succumbed to his opponent’s grappling prowess although he did have his way with Fernandes on numerous occasions. Despite the amount of time spent on the canvas, Fernandes was unable to land any substantial damage or submission attempts, but his mobility on the mat eventually bore great benefits as he swept the scorecards with a Unanimous Decision victory.
Shinya Aoki (32-6, 1 NC) had a successful debut at 145-lbs as he grappled his way through another opponent in typical fashion en route to a Unanimous Decision win. The Japanese grappling maestro landed his vintage takedowns in all three frames, although he might have been disappointed for not coming away with a finish. Aoki’s opponent, Cody Stevens (11-6-1), wasn’t a well-known fighter prior to the bout, but the American displayed some great defense in several tight spots which might have impressed fans. As Aoki garnered his 32nd career victory, it remains to be seen of what becomes of his ONE FC Lightweight strap, and his decision on whether to continue his path in the Featherweight ranks.
Other notable bouts:
Shannon Wiratchai (3-1, 1 NC) made full use of ONE FC’s “Soccer kick” rules as he garnered a spectacular stoppage victory over the much-fancied Evolve MMA native, Mitch Chilson (4-2, 1 NC). The Thai fighter had to fend off several takedown attempts from Chilson in the opening stages, who was absolutely relentless in getting the fight to the canvas. However, the American payed duly for one of his shots, as Wiratchai landed continuous blows onto Chilson’s head before teeing off on several leg kicks. Chilson was out cold, and Wiratchai gained redemption for their first meeting which was ruled a No-Contest.
Jake Butler (3-1) vs. Sylvain Potard (6-3) provided a shock result. Butler was heavily favored to gain a victory in this bout with fans and the media giving absolutely no chances to his opponent. And my oh my, the Frenchman surprised all of us. After a difficult first round, where he had to defend leg kicks and takedown attempts among others, it became clear that Potard needed to be more aggressive in the second frame. And that he was, as he capitalized on some heavy punches while going for a takedown, catching the American completely flat-footed. Butler’s legs went limp, and he looked unconscious for a moment or two. The fight was duly stopped, and it was a huge victory for Potard, who may have made a huge statement in the Asian MMA scene.
Eddie Ng (7-1) is one of theĀ “poster-boys” of the promotion and on Friday night, he made quick work of Peter Davis (6-3) with a slick Armbar finish. The Hong Kong native immediately landed a hard shot from the get-go, rocking Davis momentarily before maneuvering to side control. After a few transitions and such, Ng went for an Armbar and forced his opponent, Davis, to verbally tapout. Eddie Ng is now 4-0 under the ONE FC banner, and with his team mate Shinya Aoki making the move down to 145-lbs, only time will tell if “The Magician” will be in line for a shot at the Lightweight strap.
