It’s a short turn around for UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey, as it was announced tonight that she will be fighting again on February 22nd at UFC 170. Her opponent? Fellow 2008 Olympian Sara McMann.
Sara McMann announced as next challenger to Ronda Rousey
Dana White announced the bout earlier this evening during the post-UFC 168 press conference.
“Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (8-0) has been called – amongst other things – a “one-trick pony” by her detractors. If that’s the case, her one trick is still more than her opponents have been able to handle. With 8 submission victories to her name, all by armbar, the UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion managed to showcase improved striking in her 3 round shellacking of challenger Miesha Tate at UFC 168. Will she be able to show further improvement and gain a victory over former Olympic freestyle wrestling silver medalist McMann?
Sara McMann (7-0) has been slightly more well-rounded in her paths to victory; with 3 submissions, 1 TKO, and 3 decisions to her name. Last seen scoring her first stoppage due to strikes against Sheila Gaff at UFC 159, the 33 year-old wrestler has been absent from the Octagon in order to deal with personal issues. Those issues behind her, McMann will step into the main event spotlight and attempt to wrest the belt away from the driven champion, Rousey. Will she be able to use her wrestling to stop the Olympic judo bronze medalist’s grappling attack?
UFC 170 goes down February 22nd at the Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas, NV. The main event is Women’s Bantamweight Title clash pitting Sara McMann against champ Ronda Rousey in a battle of 2008 Olympic medalists. Stay tuned to MMASucka for more on this and other events.
