It may not be who anybody expected, but someone has indeed stepped up to save the TUF: Brazil 3 Finale main event. Titanium-chinned light heavyweight Fabio Maldonado has agreed to move up in weight to take on Stipe Miocic on May 31st.
Davi Correira announced the fight on the UFC’s Brazilian Portuguese-language site, and reported in English by Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com.
Maldonado (21-6), whose nickname “Caipira de Aco” translates into English as “Hillbilly Steel,” is undoubtedly one of the toughest men in the UFC today. The 34 year old is currently on a 3 fight winning streak, taking decision victories over Roger Hollett, Joey Beltran, and Gian Villante. Will he be able to keep his streak intact against Miocic, despite being the massive underdog?
Miocic (11-1) is also on a winning streak, having garnered strong decisions victories over Roy Nelson and Gabriel Gonzaga in his last two fights. The Strong Style Fight Team member is known, like Maldonado, for having solid boxing, and also for his movement. Will he be able to bring it to bear on the short notice replacement, Maldonado?
