UFC contender Chael Sonnen has failed a random pre-fight drug test and has since been removed from his UFC 175 bout with Vitor Belfort.
According to ESPN.com, Sonnen tested positive for two banned substances — anastrozole, which is used to inhibiting the synthesis of estrogen and clomiphene, which treats female infertility.
A statement was released from the UFC which said the following, “UFC officials acknowledge irregularities in a recent random test. Chael is planning on addressing the matter this afternoon.”
Sonnen (28-14-1) has been out of action since his UFC 167 TKO loss to Rashad Evans. Prior to that defeat, “The American Gangster” tapped out Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the very first round of their Fight Night main event.
This positive test comes just two weeks after Sonnen’s original opponent Wanderlei Silva was removed from the bout.
UFC 175 goes down on July 5 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be headlined by Chris Weidman defending his middleweight championship against Lyoto Machida. In the co-main event Ronda Rousey looks to continue on her winning ways against number one contender for her UFC women’s bantamweight title Alexis Davis.
