There will be no surprise for the biggest impact at UFC 178.

In the so-called “People’s Main Event,” Conor McGregor brought his Irish Pride to Las Vegas, Nevada and put Dustin Poirier on blast.

UFC 178’s Biggest Impact: Conor McGregor

Many fans and critics thought that McGregor was over-hyped and that Poirier would run over him. Well that hype train continued and he derailed the number five ranked flyweight on the UFC.com rankings.

UFC President Dana White immediately proclaimed that McGregor was “LEGIT”

“Notorious” is now 4-0 inside the Octagon with victories over Marcus Brimage, Max Holloway, Diego Brandao and the aforementioned Poirier. It wasn’t just the victory that made the impact on the Vegas crowd, but it was the brash comments from the Irish native following his fight that had everyone’s ears pealed.

“I don’t just knock them out, I pick the round,” McGregor said to Joe Rogan following his victory. “I said I’d knock him out in the first round and I knocked him out in the first round.”

McGregor doesn’t necessarily deserve a shot at the 145-pound title, but with this performance and White behind him, he will likely be granted one. A match-up between him and current featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo or number one contender Chad Mendes would be giant for the organization.

Ireland was on complete lockdown Saturday night for the mere one-minute and forty-six seconds that it took McGregor to take out Poirier. The first time the UFC went to Ireland was in July and McGregor headlined the card against Brandao. The event was a huge success with 9,500 in attendance and a $1.4 million gate.

It is not a surprise that McGregor is so popular, but it is surprising how quickly he has gone from UFC nobody to UFC contender.
