WSOF 16 gets a main event that sees World Series of Fighting welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares defending his belt against veteran Jon Fitch.
World Series of Fighting officials confirmed the bout late Monday.
Palhares (16-6) was released from the UFC following a quick submission win over Mike Pierce after Palhares held on to the submission too long. Seeing as how this was not his first time doing so, the company released him. Following the win over Pierce, Palhares would sign with WSOF and would be granted an immediate title shot at Steve Carl’s belt. Palhares won the fight via an inverted heel hook in just over a minute. He has 13 submission wins to his name, 10 of which by some sort of leg lock.
Fitch (26-6-1, 1 NC) was released from the UFC after amassing a record of 14-3-1 within the promotion. tThe former title challenger was released following a unanimous decision loss to Demian Maia in 2013. After being released in February, Fitch went on to make his WSOF debut in June. He faced Josh Burkman, whom he had already beat in the past. Burkman went on to choke Jon Fitch unconscious in just 0:40 seconds to spoil his debut. Since then he has won two in a row, a split decision win over Marcelo Alfaya in October of 2013 following by a unanimous decision win over fellow veteran Dennis Hallman in July of this year. This bout was contested at middleweight.
Rousimar Palhares vs. Jon Fitch will be the main event of WSOF 16. It is the only confirmed fight at this time, with Gaethje vs. Guillard being heavily rumored before being confirmed for WSOF 15 in Tampa Bay.
WSOF 16 is expected to take place on December 13. Location for the event has yet to be announced.
