UFC welterweight contender Rory MacDonald (18-2) has been a top competitor for years but has yet to fight for a championship belt, but is at a point now where he deserves a rematch against new champion Robbie Lawler for the belt. UFC gold will have to wait for the young Canadian just a little while longer, though.
Rory MacDonald will not be receiving title shot after all
On Wednesday’s edition of UFC Tonight, Ariel Helwani reported that despite the fact that MacDonald was promised the winner of Johny Hendricks vs. Lawler II following his TKO victory over Tarec Saffiedine in October, things have changed and that isn’t the case after all.
The UFC broke the news to ‘Red King’ last week that he will not be fighting for the title against Lawler quite yet. The Lawler vs. Hendricks trilogy rubber match will likely be next.
MacDonald is riding a three-fight winning streak with wins over Demian Maia, Tyron Woodley and most recently Saffiedine.
The main reason he won’t be fighting for the title next is because when Hendricks and Lawler met for the first time earlier this year, in their potential ‘Fight of the Year’ affair Hendricks took home a razor thin decision win, capturing UFC gold in his second attempt. We all know how Dana White likes to break promises. The only reason it’s understandable, because in the championship rematch, Lawler won the belt in another very close fight, and White immediately liked the thought of a trilogy fight between the two mixed-martial-artists.
MacDonald stayed cool about the situation, and is still determined to get that deserved title shot and capture UFC gold.
“It’s all good,” MacDonald said. “I’ll just light up whoever is next.”
