UFC officials made the bout announcement late Sunday evening.

Velasquez (13-1) has been out of action since October 2013 after suffering a torn meniscus and sprained MCL, which required surgery. The last time the champ was inside the Octagon was his UFC 166 TKO victory over Junior dos Santos. The 32-year-old has won four-straight, dating back to May 2012.

Werdum (19-5-1) is riding a five-fight winning streak since returning to the UFC. At UFC on FOX 11, Werdum defeated Travis Browne via decision to earn himself a crack at heavyweight gold. The 37-year-old was expected to take on Velasquez at UFC 180, however the champ pulled out due to injury and Werdum beat Mark Hunt to earn the interim title.

UFC 188 goes down on June 13 in Mexico City. A venue and other match-ups will be announced in the coming weeks.
