One of the year’s best cards just got a little better with the addition of a fun featherweight contest between Dennis Bermudez and Jeremy Stephens.
UFC.com confirmed the news late Monday.
Bermudez (14-4) was red-hot following his defeat to Diego Brandao in the finale of TUF 14. Following his FOTN, losing effort, Dennis Bermudez went on a seven-fight win streak in the span of two years. This streak includes wins over Clay Guida, Max Holloway, Matt Grice and Jimy Hettes. He won four post-fight bonuses during this run. In his most recent outing, he lost to perennial contender Ricardo Lamas by submission in round one.
Stephens (23-11) is 3-2 since dropping from lightweight to featherweight in mid-2013. He started this run with a dominant decision victory over Estevan Payan which he followed up with a knockout win over Rony Jason and another dominant decision win over Darren Elkins. He is currently on a two-fight losing streak with unanimous decision losses to Charles Oliveira and Cub Swanson, the latter was being panned a potential #1 contender fight that won both men a FOTN bonus.
This bouts placement on the card has yet to be confirmed, but it would be a solid start to the pay-per-view portion of the card.
UFC 189 is set to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 11 and will be headlined by a huge featherweight title bout between long-time champ Jose Aldo as he takes on the rising star, Ireland’s own; Conor McGregor. That takes center stage over the welterweight title fight, a rematch between Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald.
