World Series of Fighting 22: Palhares vs. Shields Results and Play-by-Play
Lightweight Gil Guardado vs. Pete Martin
Round 1
The two lightweights circle to start the round, tentatively gauging distance. Clinch is initiated by Guardado which turns into a takedown by Martin. No attempt by Martin to pass guard. He throws a few punches to the body and looks to stack his opponent. Gill is able to get to his feet and a brief exchange occurs before Pete throws a low knee which the ref calls low blow. Gil needs little recovery time and action is restarted quickly. The two circle briefly before Martin throws a high kick and charges into another successful takedown. Gil attempts a guillotine, followed by an armbar. Pete counters by stacking his opponent and escapes, attempting his own guilliotine. Both fighters seem to agree to stand and another clinch ensues. Pete lands a solid knee followed by some sharp dirty boxing to the body and head. Third successful takedown for Pete but this one is his downfall. On the way down to the mat, Guardado locks in a arm in guillotine and gets the tap after a few seconds of the hold getting secured.

Light Heavyweight Cory Hendricks vs. Julio Hinojosa
Round 1
Two fighters quickly engage in striking and move to clinch against the cage. Both work knees to the body and swap cage positions. They break and attempt to trade again. Corey throws a high kick which Julio partially blocks with his arm, but still rocks him. Corey follows up with a flurry of punches and Hinojosa collapses to the ground. Hendricks follows him to the ground and sinks in a slick no arm guillotine and put Julio to sleep belly down. Fantastic WSOF debut for Corey Hendricks.

Featherweight (Catchweight) Jimmy Jones vs. Marco Simmons
Round 1
Both fighters start by gauging each other. There’s brief exchanges but with some feints and bobs by both fighters. Big overhand misses by Simmons followed by some low kicks. Clean body kick by Marco and another brief exchange, mainly jabs with low kicks. Both sides appear tentative on the feet. Body kick followed by high kick by Jones. Another overhand by Simmons. Jones shoots in for a single leg takedown but gets hit with a big knee. They clinch and separate followed by more spurts of strikes from both fighters.
Round 2
A clinch quickly ensues against the cage but no strikes thrown by either fighter. Simmons gets the takedown and easy pass to mount. He’s looking for the arm triangle and it’s locked in but can’t finish due to the cage block his rotation. Jimmy escapes but still in danger, being mounted. Marcos eventually gets the back and looks for the RNC. He locks in a body triangle and after holding on for a little longer, Jones eventually succumbs to the choke and taps.

Flyweight Donavon Frelow vs. Carlos Garcia
Round 1
The round starts with a brief wild exchange of strikes into a clinch. Nice outside reap by Donovan, followed by some elbows into a front headlock. Garcia gets back to his feet and pushes Frelow against the fence. Garcia is reversed and is now against the fence. A few strikes are thrown by either fighter with Donovan still pressing Carlos against the fence. They separate and brief standing exchange occurs with Carlos ending up against the cage again. Donovan locks up a guillotine after landing a knee down the middle. He has it locked in and after brief struggle by Garcia, gets the tap.

Round 1
Both fighters start the round coming to the center, throwing mostly missed strikes. A blocked head kick by Clark is followed by an overhand by Huen. Some countering attempts by both fighters. Clark catches a body kick and gets the takedown but Huen gets right back up. Some feints on by both sides and gauging of distance. Huen looking to work the body and an exchange occurs with some wild strikes. More distance gauging followed by a front kick by Huen and Clark responding with a head kick. Seems both are willing to trade blow for blow. Huen’s kick is caught again but he doesn’t seem to mind. Both guys are now tentative to stay in the pocket. Huen shoots a takedown from a distance that pushes Clark against the fence. They spearate and Clark catches Jake with a right behind the ear which drops Huen but doesn’t seem to do any damage as he gets right back up. Unsuccessful Question Mark kick by Huen ends the round.
Round 2
They are sizing each other up, followed by some jabs to start the round. Single blows are traded on both sides. Clark lands a body punch and Huen barely misses with a front kick. Huen takes a bit more initiative and lunges in with a three punch combo. He lands a solid body kick, but Clark catches another kick into a quick takedown. Huen gets right back up as in round 1. It’s clear he’s looking for the lead left hook but Clark is staying back. Both fighters seem to respect each other’s power. Huen attempts a sloppy front hook kick which misses. He’s clearly more active, throwing more strikes and moving forward. Nice outside leg kick is thrown by Huen. He attempts spinning back fist but it is slow and misses. Towards the end of the round Clark finally pushes forward only to get a poke in the eye. After the restart, Huen hits a jumping side kick which gets a nice reaction from the crowd. A brief flurry from both fighters ends the round.
Round 1
Feeling out process for the first minute with few strikes thrown. Islam throws a jumping knee but Jimmy steps back to avoid. Jimmy connects with low kick and Islam responds with an unsuccessful single leg takedown. He goes for another single and Jimmy defends well briefly but eventually goes down. Spicuzza counters with a guillotine but Islam defends well. Mamedov turns him around pointing Jimmy towards the cage on top. He lands some head shots, looking to damage in the guard. Jimmy attempts an armbar but quickly relents. Islam has half guard now looking, for side control while pushing him back to the fence. Islam stands up in his guard and a scramble occurs. Islam quickly takes Jimmy’s back. Both hooks our in but with Islam close to the cage, it takes him some time to flatten him out. Mamedov eventually throws enough shots to the head that go unanswered that the ref steps in to stop the fight.

Welterweight: Abubakar Nurmagomedov vs. Jorge Moreno
Round 1
Abubakar immediately scoops up his opponent and gets the takedown. He’s in his guard now with Jorge looking for positions to escape from the bottom. Jorge sits and eventually gets up. They clinch with Jorge against the fence. Abubakar throws some crisp body and head shots. They begin to trade punches and Abubakar gets the better of the exchange and follows up with a flying knee which almost hits Jorge flush. Abubakar continues with a belly down slam, getting one hook from the back. Jorge defends the choke attempt and tries to get up. Abubakar has his back standing now and drags Jorge to the ground, softening him with head shots from the back. Jorge manages to stand up but his opponent gets a waistlock from behind. Shots to the chin from behind seem to be landing clean on Jorge. He is able to turn and face him. Another takedown by Abubakar to end the round.
Round 2
Round begins and Abubakar catches Jorge with lunging left hook to start round off. Nice uppercut combo into another takedown for Nurmagomedov. He quickly gets one hook in and goes after the choke from the behind. To soften Moren, he throws a few punches but Jorge defends well. With a burst of energy, Moren is able to get up and turn around to face Abubakar. Abubakar grabs a leg but has to let go with Jorge finally landing some clean shots. They separate and immediately trade punches. Nurmagomedov lands another clean uppercut. Jorge oddly ducks and goes for a fireman’s carry but ends up on bottom, eating a few hammer strikes for his poor decision. Abubakar spins to take the back and looks for the rear naked choke again. More methodical punches to soften Jorge but he turtles up well, facing the fence. There’s a scramble, they both stand butJorge gets him back in his guard to survive another round.
Light Heavyweight: Mike Kyle vs. Clifford Starks
Round 1
Fight starts with a feeling out with some strikes traded by both men. Kyle has his lands very low while Starks has a hunched low stance protecting his face. Big overhand by Starks nearly lands flush but Kyle is unfazed. Kyle punches in and Clifford ducks under for the takedown but is unsuccessful. They head back to the center of the cage. Starks goes for another takedown but Kyle is too quick and lands on top getting into his half guard. Mike gets a knee on the belly, but is nearly taken down if not for holding onto the cage blatantly. No point deduction even though Kyle clearly signals he’s guilty of holding. Another takedown for Kyle. He gets in some good ground and pound before they get back to the feet and look to trade standing again. Clifford lunges forward with two big rights that miss, but push Kyle to the fence. The Ref steps stops the fight briefly to cut some tape from Mike’s glove. With the restart, they trade again but both are just off with their distance. As Kyle goes for a kick, he gets taken down to end the round.
Round 2
They trade again to start the round with both fighters seem to be finding their range now. Starks catches Mike with a lunging left straight. Kyle responds with a combination ending it with a front kick that is caught by Starks who takes him down. Clifford gets to half guard, softening him with shots to the head. He briefly gets side control but Kyle is able to get him back to full guard. Kyle is now back against the fence but Starks isn’t doing much damage with strikes. Round ends with some strikes from both men.
Round 1
Some crisp kicks from the champ to start off the fight. Challenger seems to be keeping his distance waiting for his opponent to come in aggressively. Marlon lunges in and attempts to muscle a takedown, pushing his opponent into the fence. Marlon goes for the bodylock takedown but Sheymon is able to break free and they retake the center of the cage. Accidental low front kick momentarily stops action. Counter left nearly sends challenger to the canvas. Not a high volume or any significant strikes thrown by either man. Bodylock takedown by the champion to end the round.
Round 2
Bodykick by the challenger to start this round. Another sharp kick almost lands by Sheymon. The champion seems to be more tentative this round with the challenger taking the center of the cage quickly. A lunging left by the champ connects and knocks down Sheymon but he recovers quickly to his feet. The challenger connects with a right hook flush but the champ continues to bounce side to side. A combination left/right by the challenger connect but another low blow by the challenger stops any momentum collected. No point deduction for the low blow. Bodykick by the champ connects, followed by missed spinning back kick by Marlon to end the round.
Round 3
Kicks by the challenger as he takes the center of the cage to start the round back up the champ. Both men are just outside the pocket as with most of the first two rounds. They both seem to close this distance at the same time, with the champ almost landing a clean right hook behind the ear of the challenger. The crowd begins to boo with all the missed strikes being thrown. Both fighters seem to react to the booing and begin throwing wild hooks in the pocket, with one of Marlon’s lefts connecting and spinning Sheymon around to the ground. The champ is able to the back and while the challenger is attempting to stand up on all fours and sinks in the rear naked choke for the win.

Welterweight Championship: Rousimar Palhares (c) vs. Jake Shields
Round 1
Palhares weaves in early with strikes for a takedown. Shields wrestles him to his guard butPalhares gets up. Shields returns fire and grabs a single leg and gets him down. Shields is in his guard looking to pass to side control. He switches to an attempted arm triangle but Palhares gets back him back to his guard. The challenger throws some hard punches in the guard and switches back to passing getting side control. Palhares is able to get back up but Shields with a single leg takedown drags the champ down, landing in side control. Shields pushes him down but Palhares gets side control, landing elbows to the top of the head. Both men are now looking for strikes on the ground. An elbow from the bottom seems to have cut Jake and both men stand as the horn sounds.
Round 2
Jake immediately shoots for a takedown and after a scramble, lands in the champs guard. More elbows and strikes follow from the bottom from the champ. Shields stands up looking for body punches. He dives back to the ground looking to pass to side control but instead lands in the champ’s guard. Palhares looks for the Kimura on his left side but Jake breaks free. Jake gets butthe ref stops the action to warn the champ to not scratch Jake’s face. The fight restarts in mount and as Jake throws some quick punches, Palhares bucks and rolls into a heel hook. Jake defends correctly, steps out of it and gets back into Palhares guard when the round ends.
Round 3
Shields gets a takedown but Palhares immediately gets up. Another attempt by the challenger but the champ sprawls out of it. A wild exchange ensues with knees and a spinning back kick by the champ end with Jake’s back against the fence. He eats some heavy body punches and another knee before collapsing onto all fours. The champ is unloading on Shields’ body before the challenger is able to stand back up. A low kick by the champ is caught and he gets taken down. Immediately he locks in the figure four on the way down and rollsShields into a Kimura. Shields immediately taps but the champ doesn’t let go even after the ref calls him off putting his hands across Palhares’ back. When the champ finally lets go, Shields throws a punch sitting that connects with Palhares’ chin after the fight. The champ looks on in bewilderment and stands with his hands out as though he’s not sure why the challenger would do such a thing.
