While the last couple of weeks of fight cards have seen many fighters with passable, if not outright good, walkouts, nothing gold can stay. Just as there are fighters who get the idea of identifying themselves with a memorable song, there are many who have no clue about it. Some of them make an entrance to a song used by many, some to a song that doesn’t fit their brand, and still others who just walk to listless tunes. That’s why I’m here. As MMASucka.com’s resident board-certified musicologist, I’m here publicly offer suggestions to help certain fighters on the TUF 24 Finale from the top to the bottom.
Demetrious Johnson
What he walked out to last: “Who Gon’ Stop Me” – Jay Z & Kanye West
What he should walk out to next: “Dreaded Fist” – Rascalz
In previous Walkout Consultant pieces, I’ve noted that there should be a ban on any music that can be connected to a Kardashian by two degrees of separation or less. That still stands. With that said, while the title of “Who Gon’ Stop Me” is appropriate for Demetrious Johnson, it’s lacking in the hook and build-up departments. Moving closer to home for “Mighty Mouse,” the song “Dreaded Fist” by Vancouver rap crew the Rascalz brings a build up and a kung fu movie-style hook into play before the lyrics about the “Dreaded Fist of the Northwest” – a euphemism for DJ’s recent finishing ability, to be sure – kick in. Check it out below.
Jake Ellenberger
What he walked out to last: “300 Violin Orchestra” – Jose Quintero
What he should walk out to next: “Here We Are Juggernaut” – Coheed and Cambria
Jake Ellenberger, like many fighters, has walked out to “300 Violin Orchestra” in the past. While the tune in and of itself isn’t bad, it’s over-used. So the time has come to switch it up to something that might be a little more relevant to “the Juggernaut” brand. Coheed and Cambria’s music has always had an epic, cinematic feel that makes for good walkouts, and they even have a song called “Here We Are Juggernaut.” How’s that for synergy? Check it out below.
Gray Maynard
What he walked out to last: “Spirits” – The Strumbellas
What he should walk out to next: “You Can’t Bring Me Down” – Suicidal Tendencies
At the TUF 23 Finale, Gray Maynard debuted a new walkout that ranks up there with Meisha Tate’s use of “Roar” as one of the worst songs ever used for an entrance. All you have to do is look at the thumbnail on Youtube for the Strumbellas’ “Spirits” and you can tell it’s hipster shit. Hit play and you’ll hear that this limp-wristed book can be judged by its cover. If you need music to inspire you and fill you with hope and power, then look no further than Suicidal Tendencies and “You Can’t Bring Me Down.” Listen below.
