Yair Rodriguez Has Been Released by UFC

Two prospects with bright futures, Yair Rodriguez and Zabit Magomedsharipov were expected to square off at UFC 227. However, one refused and according to UFC President Dana White has now been released from the organization. That man is Yair Rodriguez.

On Thursday evening, White told the Los Angeles Times that Rodriguez had refused to accept the fight with Magomedsharipov and was ultimately let go.

Yair Rodriguez cut by UFC

“The guy’s off a year, rejects a fight with Lamas and then doesn’t want to fight a guy below him in the rankings?” White said. “He can go somewhere else. We have no use for him. He calls that fight fake news. This is real news.”

Rodriguez (10-2) has been out of action since his 2017 one-sided loss to Frankie Edgar. That was just the second loss on the Mexican’s career. Prior to that loss, “El Pantera” was riding an eight-fight winning streak, with six of those victories inside the Octagon. He holds notable wins over Charles Rosa, Andre Fili, Alex Caceres and the legend B.J. Penn.

The 25-year-old will likely end up signing with another promotion very soon, but at this point the future is unknown.
